  8. On  Tuesday  evening I called Rocky (Sysop of Citadel BBS) At 19:40 hrs.
  9. As  soon  as  I  called him my wife said "Theres 2 blokes walking up the
  10. path  to  the  house,  are you expecting anyone?" I Said "No,If theres a
  11. problem  give  me a shout".  No sooner had I said it and started to chat
  12. to  Rocky  my wife said "You better get out here quick!".  I dropped the
  13. telephone  and  ran  to the hall.....  I saw 3 suited men standing in my
  14. hall !!!.

  16. One  of  them said "I am detective Constable ???????  and I am arresting
  17. you  for  fraudulent  use  of  electricity" I told them to get out of my
  18. house  before  I throw you out.!!!  With that, one of the detectives got
  19. his  badge  out  and flashed it in my face!  I said "I dont care who you
  20. are,  show  me  a warrant or I'me throwing you through the door"(made of
  21. glass!!!)  They  radio'd  for uniformed backup when I saidthat....I then
  22. said  "before  they  get  here, you're out of here,if you dontget out of
  23. here NOW, I'me throwing you out THROUGH the door!!!" With thisthey could
  24. tell that I was serious.....and they walked out the door.

  26. I walked out of the door straight after them, closing it on the way, and
  27. said  "ok then, lets go!".  With that, I was arrested and taken in a car
  28. toa  Police  Station.   I  didnt say anything until my brief arrived and
  29. advisedme what to say.  In the meantime....I was banged up in a cell for
  30. 2 hours!

  32. When  my  brief  arrived  I spoke to her in a private booth,she asked me
  33. what  I  had  done  and  told her the TRUTH.  That I had been using 0800
  34. numbers  and  obtaining  free  calls!.  She advised me to say that I was
  35. given  the number from a friend of mine that worked for British Telecom,
  36. and  that  I  was not told that I was committing a criminal act by using
  37. them!.I also said that I was not willing to give them his name as he was
  38. a friend,I would say no more than that because I didn't want him to lose
  39. his job!

  41. It was pointed out to me that what I was doing was committing "FRAUD".
  42.  
  43. FRAUD  is an offence that you must inform all future employers of!  This
  44. is a very serious offence.(though I was only using an 0800 number) FRAUD
  45. was  still the crime!  I said that I was sorry for using it, but was not
  46. aware  that  I was breaking any laws!, as a person who works for British
  47. Telecom  gave me it!  I said that the number was given to me by him so i
  48. must have had permission!It was then pointed out that unless I was given
  49. permission  by  the  person  who pays the bill, I was not authorised.  I
  50. again said that I was sorry but I didn't know this.

  52. The   British   Telecom   Investigation   Manager  then  took  over  the
  53. questioning.  He introduced himself as Mr Adrian Gorham, British Telecom
  54. Investigation  Manager.   He  went on to say that these numbers had been
  55. put  on  there  only  for  British Telecom employees, who had been given
  56. permission to use them in carrying out they're duties!  He said a lot of
  57. things........

  59. 1.  The numbers were put out on 6 Feb 95.
  60.  
  61. 2.  The numbers were 0800 252 495 and 0800 526 192.

  63. 3.  Both of these numbers have been traced since they were put on!
  64.  
  65. 4.  Anyone who has used this number, has had a trace put on their line!
  66.  
  67. 5.  There are 5 arrests being made tonight, The night I was arrested!
  68.  
  69. 6.  I was recieving calls every night for the previos 3 weeks that were
  70.     also using the numbers.

  72. 7.   He  told  me  EVERY  0800  number  that  I had dialled since 21 Nov
  73.      94!(six)
  74.  
  75. 8.  He had a list of BBS's that I had called using these numbers.

  77. 9.   He  said  He  knew that the majority of the calls to my number were
  78.      used with a modem!
  79.  
  80. I could go on a lot more than that, This bloke wasn't asking me anything
  81. he  was telling me!!!  He had every call I made since 21 Nov 94 in front
  82. of him(4 inches thick) it looked something like this...

  95. This bloke had done his homework, and I dont think for a minute that him
  96. calling round my house was a rush job, this had been planned in advance!
  97. He also had my brothers number, He asked me if I recognised it?  He told
  98. me that my brother was using the number as well!He showed me a number of
  99. numbers  and  told me that they were also using the number!  I said that
  100. as  soon  as I got home I would be calling these people and telling them
  101. that  you  are  monitoring  there numbers and they wont use 0800 numbers
  102. again!

  104. He  told  me  that  if  they used them they would be getting a visit!  I
  105. think  he  was serios, he had no reason not to be!  He then asked what I
  106. intended  to  do  about  all  the calls that I had made through the 0800
  107. numbers?

  109. I told him that because an employee of British Telecom gave them to me I
  110. thought that I could use the numbers and not pay!If I had known that all
  111. the calls were going to be charged I wouldnt have used the phone so much
  112. and that I was not prepared to pay for the calls that I had made!
  113.  
  114. The  interview then finished.  I was then released on unconditional bail
  115. until  3  May  95.  I have to return to the Police Station then.  In the
  116. mean time,this gives the Police and British Telecom 6 weeks to put their
  117. case together.

  119. I am facing the following charges.....
  120.  
  121.      1.  Having FRAUD against my name for life.
  122.  
  123.      2.  A fine imposed by the courts for FRAUDULENT USE OF ELECTRICITY.
  124.  
  125.      3.  British Telecom Demanding their money back (through the court).
  126.          For all the calls that I have made through the 0800 numbers.

  128. What was a bit of fun has turned a lot WORSE!!!!

  130. At  the  end of the day, I did not have my equipment taken!  only due to
  131. my forcefulness when they came into my house!I know that there are a lot
  132. of  you  out  there  still  living  with  your  parents!   this could be
  133. embarrassing for them (neighbours) as it would be for you.  (We all know
  134. what  parents are like......yes officer, come in, yes my lad does have a
  135. computer, yes officer he's on it now in the bedroom........) I think you
  136. know what I'm saying.  You havn't a leg to stand on, at least I did!

  140. I  can honestly say that I will not be using another 0800 number for the
  141. rest  of  my  life,  I  cannot afford to be seen to KNOWINGLY use one of
  142. these numbers again after being done for it previously.

  144. To all of you out there who are worrying about the numbers you have used
  145. i can only advise you of this.....
  146.  
  147. If you havnt been caught yet,stop using it.!In 6 months you can use them
  148. again for a little while..BUT,if you get caught this time round you will
  149. not be able to do it again the same as me!!

  151. I have been told by the British Telecom Investigation Manager that those
  152. 0800  numbers are being monitored at this moment!, they are not going to
  153. pull the plug on them, as long as people are using them and they can get
  154. more arrests they will!!!!

  156. There are 6 numbers that they are monitoring, at least, because they are
  157. the  ones I have been using!!!!!  At the end of the day you are the only
  158. one  who has to decide what to do!  But, my advice is....  STAY OFF THEM
  159. ....  COME BACK ANOTHER DAY!!
